Timeframes and reading a run of candles
How candle timeframes work, why the same market looks different on 5-minute and daily charts, and how to read a sequence of candles calmly.
The timeframe of a chart is the length of time each candle covers. Common choices are 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, 1 day and 1 week. You choose it, and the choice changes the picture a lot.
One daily candle contains 24 one-hour candles. A day that ends as a small green candle may have included a sharp drop and a sharp recovery that you can only see on the hourly chart. On a 1-minute chart, almost every move looks dramatic. On a weekly chart, the same moves may be tiny ripples.
