Crypto risk management: survive first

Updated 2026-10-12 · 5 min read

In crypto, the investors who last are rarely the ones with the best picks. They are the ones who size positions sensibly, expect big drawdowns, and never let one mistake end the game. Here is how to think about risk before you think about returns.

Key takeaways

  • Losses compound against you: a 50% drop needs a 100% gain to recover.
  • Position size is the most powerful risk tool you control.
  • Most altcoins are strongly correlated with bitcoin, so owning many of them is less diversified than it looks.
  • Liquidity risk and custody risk can hurt you even when your market view is right.
  • Decide your exit conditions before you enter, not during a crash.

The arithmetic of losses

Percent losses and percent gains are not symmetric:

Loss Gain needed to break even
10% 11.1%
25% 33.3%
50% 100%
75% 300%
90% 900%
Gain needed = 1 / (1 − loss) − 1

Crypto has seen drawdowns of 75% or more in large assets during bear markets, and many smaller tokens never recovered at all. Protecting against deep losses matters more than squeezing out extra upside.

Position sizing

Position size is the share of your capital in a single asset. A simple, widely used approach is to decide the most you are willing to lose on one idea, then work backwards:

Position size = (capital × max loss per idea) / distance to your exit level

Example: with $10,000 in capital, a 1% maximum loss per idea ($100) and an exit level 20% below your entry, the position is $100 / 0.20 = $500. If the asset is more volatile and you need a 40% buffer, the position halves to $250.

This framework forces you to think about volatility. A position that looks small in dollars can still dominate your risk if the asset swings wildly.

Volatility and drawdown

Volatility is the standard deviation of returns. DUKOIN uses realized volatility of daily log returns over 30 days in the Research Score, and an exponentially weighted version in its forecasts. To compare horizons, volatility scales roughly with the square root of time: daily volatility of 4% implies roughly 4% × √30 ≈ 22% over 30 days, under the simplifying assumption that daily returns are independent.

Maximum drawdown is the worst peak-to-trough fall over a period. It captures the pain an investor would actually have experienced. Two assets with the same volatility can have very different drawdowns if one trended steadily down.

Correlation and the diversification illusion

Holding ten altcoins can feel diversified. In practice, most crypto assets rise and fall with BTC, and correlations tend to rise during sell-offs, exactly when you need diversification most. Two useful measures:

  • Beta to BTC: how much an asset tends to move for each 1% move in bitcoin. A beta of 1.5 suggests roughly a 15% move for a 10% BTC move, on average, with plenty of variation.
  • Concentration: the share of your portfolio in your largest positions. If one position is half your portfolio, its risk is your risk.

DUKOIN’s Risk Studio calculates concentration, portfolio volatility, BTC beta and maximum drawdown for your own holdings, and runs stress scenarios such as BTC −10%, ETH −20% and altcoins −30%, with every assumption shown.

Liquidity risk

An asset is only worth what you can sell it for. In thin markets, selling even a modest amount can move the price several percent, and in a panic order books can empty out. Signs of liquidity risk include low 24-hour volume, low turnover relative to market cap, and trading concentrated on a single venue.

Stablecoin and counterparty risk

Stablecoins feel like cash, but they carry issuer, reserve and mechanism risk. Several have lost their peg in the past, some permanently. Exchanges and lending platforms can also fail; customers of collapsed platforms have waited years for partial recoveries. Spread counterparty exposure and understand what backs any stablecoin you hold.

Custody and operational risk

  • Use strong, unique passwords and hardware-key or app-based two-factor authentication.
  • Back up seed phrases offline and never type them into a website or chat.
  • Send a small test transaction before a large one.
  • Assume unsolicited messages about your account are phishing.

DUKOIN never asks for exchange keys, seed phrases or wallet access. Portfolio tracking works from manually entered transactions or CSV imports.

Write your plan before you need it

Decisions made during a 30% crash are rarely your best. Before entering any position, write down why you are buying, what would prove you wrong, the price or condition at which you would exit, and how much of your portfolio it may become if it rises sharply. Smart Alerts can notify you when price crosses a level you chose in a calmer moment.

Rebalancing: letting winners stay winners, safely

Positions drift. If one asset triples while the rest of your portfolio is flat, it can quietly grow from 10% to 30% of your capital, and your risk now depends on a single token. Rebalancing means trimming positions that have grown beyond the size you planned and, if you choose, adding to underweight ones.

Two common approaches are calendar rebalancing, for example quarterly, and threshold rebalancing, where you act only when a position moves a set amount away from its target weight, such as five percentage points. Threshold rules tend to trade less often. Either way, remember that selling can create a taxable event in many countries, and that trading costs and slippage add up in smaller assets.

Risk check

No risk framework removes the possibility of loss. Stress scenarios are illustrations based on stated assumptions, not predictions, and real crashes can be worse than any scenario. This guide is educational and not personal financial advice.

A risk checklist

  1. What is the most I can lose on this position, in dollars, if my exit fails and it gaps lower?
  2. How much of my portfolio moves with BTC?
  3. Could I exit this position within a day without large slippage?
  4. Where is the asset held, and what happens if that platform fails?
  5. Have I written down my exit conditions?

Put it into practice

DUKOIN shows these metrics live for ~250 assets, with sources and timestamps.
